I’ve been diving into the details of the Suitland murders and something really sticks with me—how closely knit the community must have been and how devastating it was for families like Angela Maria Wilkerson's. I can’t even begin to imagine the fear and pain they felt during that time, knowing a predator was out there targeting young Black women.
Angela went missing in early January 1987, and the uncertainty that must have accompanied those days when she was missing has to be unbearable. The fact that her body was found near the Bradbury Recreational Center, where multiple victims were tragically discovered, adds a chilling layer to the story. Wilkerson and the other women deserved so much better.
I’m particularly struck by the bravery and tenacity of the families and authorities in pushing for answers despite so many obstacles. It’s unsettling that sadly, Alton Alonso Best, though arrested around the time the murders stopped, wasn’t linked definitively. The families deserve closure and justice; Angela deserves it.
I hope someday there will be a breakthrough that can bring a measure of peace to Wilkerson’s loved ones and the loved ones of the other victims. They remain in my thoughts.
