I can't stop thinking about the role of mentors and positive influences in young people's lives, especially after hearing about Jairah Biggs and what happened to her and her mom, Malika Whiting. I read that Jairah was described by her mentor, Gabrielle Williams, as incredibly sweet and kind-hearted. It just makes me wonder how this tragedy might affect those who were close to her, like her mentors, teachers, and friends.
Jairah had a bright future ahead with the support she received from programs aimed at helping young people succeed. It's so crucial for communities to rally around our youth, especially when they've gone through trauma or loss. Gabrielle Williams and others like her make such an impact, and I hope they can find some peace knowing they were a positive force in Jairah's life. It's hard to wrap my head around the loss, but I believe that remembering and continuing to support those who are hurt by this is one way to honor their memory. My thoughts are with Santana Maher, his siblings, and everyone affected.
I've been thinking a lot about Santana Maher and his siblings in the wake of this unspeakable tragedy. It's hard enough to lose a family member, but to lose both your mother and sister in such a horrific way is beyond comprehension. The strength that Santana has shown in trying to take care of his younger siblings is truly commendable. It’s a testament to the love and resilience that Malika must have passed on to her children. I really hope the community continues to rally around them and supports the fundraiser he's set up. No child should have to become a caretaker under these circumstances, and ensuring they have the support they need is crucial. If anyone has ideas on how else we can help, please share. Let's do what we can to ease even a little bit of their burden.
