I’ve been thinking a lot about the role bystanders often play in these tragic situations and how terrifying it must have been for anyone who witnessed what unfolded outside that Foot Locker. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time can change a life forever. For Juvan Maurice Newman and Steven Edward Gardin Jr., stepping out of that Jeep must have seemed like the best way to calm the situation. It's easy to speculate on what could have been done differently, but I can't begin to imagine the intensity and confusion they were experiencing. My heart truly aches for their families and friends, and for everyone who was caught up in that chaos. I hope the witnesses who were there can find the strength to come forward and help piece together the series of events. Sharing what they saw might be traumatic, but it is crucial for the investigation and for justice to be served.
