I just can't wrap my head around the system's failures in the case of David Maust. Knowing he was released early from an already lenient 35-year sentence sends chills up my spine. James McClister's death supposedly being an "accident" is hard to swallow, especially looking back at how Maust's crimes escalated. I feel for James' family and wonder if this tragedy could have been prevented if the consequences were more severe upfront. Maybe James and the other victims would have had a chance at life if the system had recognized Maust’s potential for future violence. How do families even begin to heal with such glaring lapses in justice?
