I’ve been thinking a lot about how differently things might have turned out if someone had noticed something was off when Terry and her children crossed paths with Judy. As a community, we often hear stories about trusting our instincts when something doesn’t feel right. Sadly, in April 1979, the Chasteen family fell victim to a manipulative predator who exploited that natural tendency to trust.
Steven T. Judy's actions were beyond comprehension, and it's terrifying how he was able to convince Terry that he was there to help. The deception—posing as a good Samaritan offering assistance—reflects just how calculated and dangerous he was. It’s a sobering reminder of the critical importance of vigilance and looking out for one another.
The bravery of the mushroom hunters who discovered the bodies is another poignant aspect of this case. They likely had no idea their morning would unfold into such a tragic discovery, but their decision to report what they found was crucial in launching a swift police response. It's haunting to think what might have happened if they hadn't come across the scene that day.
My heart aches for the remaining family and friends who were forced to endure such unimaginable loss. No family should ever endure what the Chasteen family went through. If anything, this case should strengthen our resolve to cherish every moment with our loved ones and take heed when something feels amiss in our everyday lives.
I came across an interesting detail about the Steven T. Judy case that I hadn’t seen discussed much before. Did anyone else read about the fact that Judy showed no remorse during his trial and even went as far as to tell the jury that he deserved the death penalty? I can’t begin to imagine the anguish Terry Lee Chasteen's family must have felt watching someone so cold and unrepentant stand trial for such a heinous act. It's chilling to think how Judy seemed almost indifferent to the gravity of his crimes. The fact that he was so blunt about deserving the harshest punishment really highlights the terrifying nature of his mindset. While justice was served, it’s hard to find solace in a case as devastating as this one. Sending love to the Chasteen family for what strength they must have needed to endure the trial and its aftermath.
