I've always thought about how truly terrifying it must have been for the community during this dark period when the Southside Slayer was at large. I read about Verna Patricia Williams' case and couldn't help but think about her students who found her. Those poor kids! I can't even begin to imagine the trauma of stumbling upon such a devastating scene at a place that's supposed to be safe. It just breaks my heart for them and for Verna's loved ones. On top of all this tragedy, her murder went unsolved for over two decades, which must have been incredibly hard for everyone who cared about her. It's at least a small relief that they finally identified her killer years later, but I can't help feeling that justice took way too long. I hope Verna and all the other victims of these horrific crimes are remembered and honored, and their families feel some sense of peace knowing the truth finally came out. What strikes me is how dangerous it was back then and the immense struggle law enforcement faced in trying to connect these dots.
