I've been looking into the George Hassell case and something that's really been on my mind is how the community reacted back in Whittier after the murders in 1917. Imagine living right next door and not realizing anything was wrong until nearly a decade later when the truth came out. I can't imagine the shock and sorrow those neighbors must have felt, realizing they'd been deceived in such a tragic way. It's chilling to think about how Hassell managed to carry on with his life for so many years after committing such horrific acts. Burying the bodies underneath the home and then coming up with a story about the family leaving town shows a level of manipulation that's just terrifying. If anyone here has read any witness accounts or local newspapers from that time, I'd love to know more about how the news was finally received in the community. I'm sure those revelations must have shaken many people to their core.

I've been thinking a lot about the neighbors in Whittier who lived near the Baker household in 1917. Imagine having someone you thought you knew suddenly reveal such a horrific truth, almost a decade later. I can't help but wonder about the emotional fallout from discovering that the friendly neighbor who said his family "left town" actually committed such an atrocious act. Back then, people didn't have the extensive resources we do now to help process such trauma. It's terrifying to think they were unknowingly living close to such horror. I mean, these were people who probably interacted with the family regularly, maybe even watched the kids play. It's all so chilling, especially considering how easily he seemed to pull the wool over their eyes. Anyone else ever wonder how the community must've felt when they found out years later what had really happened? How they would have coped with the guilt and fear that must have arisen from these revelations?
