I recently came across the tragic story of little Rita Baker and cannot stop thinking about the impact on the community all those years ago. It's chilling to imagine how many families were affected by George Jefferson Hassell's actions before he was finally caught. The late discovery of his horrendous acts must have been a terrible shock for the community and for the families who believed their loved ones had simply disappeared. I keep thinking about how it must have felt for neighbors who were told the family had left town. The kind of betrayal they must have felt, realizing that the people they lived alongside for months had been brutally silenced and buried so nearby. For me, it serves as a poignant reminder of how important it is to look after one another and to notice when something feels off within our communities. It’s impossible to change the past, but being vigilant and compassionate might help prevent future tragedies. My thoughts are with Rita and her family, and with the generations who have kept the memory of these victims alive.
