Does anyone else find it unsettling how little attention was given to Artemus Brewer's death? It's like he became just another footnote in Lizzie Halliday's violent story. I can't help but feel for his family, who were probably left with unanswered questions and grief. It's shocking to think about how systemic failures at the time allowed someone like Halliday to keep moving through life unchecked. We often talk about her confirmed victims, but Brewer's death seems so overshadowed. It's as if he vanished into thin air, and there are few records, if any, discussing the circumstances around his death. It makes you wonder if there were signs that were ignored or, worse, not even recognized because her later crimes hadn't come to light yet. We may never know for sure if he was one of her first victims, but it seems worth exploring, even if just to acknowledge his story.
