On December 8, 1974, Moses Yakanac, a 47-year-old Native Alaskan man described as homeless and likely struggling with alcoholism, was found brutally murdered in a Skid Row alley in downtown Los Angeles. His killing was part of a renewed series of slayings in December 1974 that investigators later linked to the offender nicknamed the Skid Row Slasher.
Victims in the series were typically discovered with their throats slashed and sometimes with ritualistic elements such as salt sprinkled around the bodies and cups of blood left nearby. Early suspect profiling in the investigation inaccurately described the perpetrator as a white male in his late twenties or early thirties, about six feet tall with shoulder-length blond hair, a misdirection that delayed identification of the killer.
The case eventually moved toward an arrest and prosecution; Moses Yakanac was among the victims included in the charges that led to a conviction. If anyone knew Moses, his routines, associates, or saw anything unusual in the Skid Row area in December 1974, please share what might help clarify what happened.
