I came across some old articles about Mabel Brown's case that brought up an interesting point. Apparently, there were reports of a witness who claimed to have seen a suspicious figure around Mabel's home the night before her death. The description given wasn't very detailed – just a shadowy silhouette in a dark coat. Unfortunately, with no photographic evidence or clear identification, it seems like it didn’t help much back then. Still, it got me thinking about how easy it was for potential suspects to slip through the cracks in 1903, especially with forensic science still in its infancy. I can only imagine the frustration and despair Mabel’s family and friends must have felt knowing there was so much uncertainty surrounding her tragic death. It feels like there are just too many pieces missing to paint a clear picture of what truly happened to her.
