I recently came across some testimonies from other patients' families who were in Somerset Medical Center around the time of Michael Strenko’s tragic passing. It’s chilling to think that Michael, just starting his adult life, was taken in such a senseless way. These families recounted how they noticed unusual behaviors from Cullen, like him spending more time than expected with patients who weren’t in critical condition. It seems people did feel something was off but maybe didn’t realize the severity or weren’t in positions to question it.
My heart truly goes out to anyone who crossed paths with him during this time. It makes you wonder about the oversight and checks that were—or weren’t—in place back then. For Michael's family, not only did they lose their son, but they had to fight to understand how and why something so unfathomable happened. It drives home the importance of institutional accountability. What measures do you think could have been enforced to detect Cullen's pattern earlier? And how have hospitals improved patient safety since then?
