I’ve been reading up on the Irene Blase case and the way it intersects with Richard Cottingham’s confessions is chilling. While we’re all talking about the justice aspect now that he’s admitted to the murder, I can’t help but think about the environment in Bergen County back then. It must have been terrifying for families during that time, especially knowing that a serial killer was on the loose. I read somewhere that after her disappearance, parents wouldn't let their kids walk anywhere alone, and everyone was suspicious of strangers. It’s such a sorrowful thing to think about the fear that permeated daily life for so many families, especially since they were transitioning to what they hoped would be a safer, suburban area. My heart goes out to the Blase family and all those impacted. Even with his confessions, I wonder how many memories or details have been lost over the years due to the initial lack of closure.
