I’ve always been puzzled by the second fire that destroyed the Burkes’ home after Thomas's death. Given the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death and Velma's later convictions, I'm curious if this could have been a cover-up attempt. The timing seems too coincidental to ignore. It must have been incredibly painful for the children to lose their father and then see their home turned to ashes twice. Such a traumatic experience could have lasting effects, and it's heartbreaking to think of the struggles the family faced in the years following. Does anyone think the second fire was intentionally set, or do you think it was just another tragic event for the Burke family?

Does anyone else find it odd that Velma Barfield seemed to always be around when these tragic events occurred? I can't shake the feeling that there’s more to the story, especially given her connection to other suspicious deaths. It makes me wonder about the fire that followed Thomas Burke's tragic end. Was it just sheer bad luck, or was there something more sinister at play? I feel for Thomas’s family and the pain they must feel with so many unanswered questions. I hope one day they get the closure they deserve.

I've been thinking a lot about the neighbors and community during the time of Thomas Burke's death. It's hard to imagine the impact such a tragedy would have on a small community in North Carolina. Having a trusted neighbor pass away in such a horrific way must have sent shockwaves through the neighborhood. People probably spent years questioning what really happened that night and wondering if they could have done anything differently to help the Burke family. I can't help but wonder about the initial reaction of those living nearby. Did anyone see or hear anything unusual that night but dismiss it at the time? It seems like these indirect witnesses might hold tiny pieces of information that could one day unravel the mystery surrounding Thomas's death. Especially considering the second fire, I would think local gossip and rumors must have been rampant at one time. If anyone here grew up in the area or has family who did, I'd love to hear any stories passed down that might shed light on the community's reaction back then. It's just so sad to think that those children lost their father and later saw their home completely destroyed. My thoughts go out to anyone connected to this haunting piece of history.
