Did anyone else come across the detail about the community’s response after the tragic death of Posseman Edward C. Smith? I understand emotions were running high back then, especially after such a devastating loss, but storming the jail and taking matters into their own hands... that just sounds like the wild west we see in movies. I feel so deeply for Smith’s family, who had to cope not only with his death but also with the chaos that followed. It's a stark reminder of the era's desperation and the lengths communities would go to seek their version of justice. Does anyone know if there were ever any legal consequences for those involved in the lynch mob? Surely, this had long-term effects on the community?
