I was recently reading about Charles Whitman's shooting spree, and the tragic story of Robert Hamilton Boyer really stood out to me. It's deeply upsetting to think about how he was just visiting Austin to see friends and take care of some personal matters, only to become a victim of such senseless violence. From what I've read, Boyer was an incredibly bright individual with a promising future. I can't begin to imagine the pain his family and friends felt losing him in such a shocking manner. It's moments like these that remind us of the fragility of life and the urging need for empathy and understanding in the face of mental health struggles. People in Texas and beyond came together in the aftermath, which I hope brought some comfort to the loved ones of all the victims. If anyone has more information on Boyer’s life or his accomplishments in mathematics, I'd really appreciate learning more about him beyond this tragic context.
