I wanted to touch on the remarkable resilience shown by Officer Valentine D. "Val" Lopez, Jr. during and after the tragic events of February 17, 1977. His ability to continue serving his community and maintain his dedication to the San Antonio Police Department after such a traumatic incident says a lot about his character. It's not just his bravery on that fateful night but also his determination to lead a life of service despite the personal challenges that followed. It’s incredibly touching to think about the strength he must have had to continue for all those years, under the cloud of injuries that eventually led to his passing. My heart goes out to his family who carried these burdens alongside him, always supporting him through the toughest of times. Officer Lopez’s legacy truly exemplifies courage and selfless dedication. His story will always be an inspiration to those serving in law enforcement and beyond.

Just thinking about how much Officer Lopez must have loved his community and family to put himself in harm's way like that. It must have taken so much bravery to keep doing his job, even after receiving such life-threatening injuries. The fact that he managed to apprehend the suspect even after being shot twice is a testament to his incredible strength and dedication. It's so tragic that he faced complications from his injuries for years before passing away. I can’t begin to imagine what his family went through during all those years and after losing him in 2006. I hope they’ve found some comfort in knowing how much he was respected and admired, both by his colleagues and by those of us who have learned about his story. His legacy is definitely one of heroism and courage.
