I’ve been doing some reading on the case of Patrolman Ernesto Serna, and one detail really stood out to me—the courage he must have had to confront someone he suspected of shoplifting while off duty. I can’t imagine the level of split-second decision making he had to go through in that parking lot. It’s a harrowing reminder of how officers, even when off-duty, are always bound by their oath to protect and serve. The fact that despite his severe injuries, he was able to return fire is testament to his training and determination.
I feel deeply for his family, especially knowing he had just come back from a military tour and was probably hoping to spend some more quiet time with his loved ones. It’s both tragic and inspiring that his sons chose to follow in his footsteps. I hope his story continues to encourage dialogue about the risks law enforcement personnel face, especially when they’re trying to prevent harm to others. Sending thoughts to his family and all who continue to remember and honor his life.
