I've been thinking about the immense trust Selena placed in Yolanda Saldívar, and it just brings a chill to consider how that trust was betrayed so horribly. Selena was more than an employer to Saldívar—she considered her a friend. To realize that someone in your inner circle, responsible for your fan club and business operations, could harbor such ill will must have been incredibly confusing for Selena in those final moments.
The fact that Selena agreed to drive her to the hospital speaks volumes about her character. Selena wanted to do the right thing, even when she was upset about the embezzlement. It's tragic how, in trying to help Saldívar, Selena walked right into danger. My heart goes out to Selena's family, who not only lost a daughter and sister but were also blindsided by the deceit of someone they, too, probably trusted. We must remember Selena for the vibrant and compassionate person she was, not just the circumstances of her passing. Her music and her spirit left an indelible mark that inspires and uplifts.
