It's been a while since I came across the story of Officer Reuben Becerra DeLeon Jr., and it still gets to me. What stands out is the sheer senselessness of the crime. It's haunting to think that he was targeted as part of a gang initiation. This wasn’t a random act—those suspects knew exactly what they were doing. As a former Marine and a young officer, Reuben was committed to protecting others, and he deserved so much more. Reading about how his fellow officers and the community came together at his funeral shows the deep bond and respect shared in law enforcement. It’s hard not to think about his family, especially his kids, growing up without their dad. They lost a husband and father, and we lost someone truly dedicated to serving. It’s frustrating that the presence of mindless violence puts dedicated people like Officer DeLeon at risk every day. I hope his family has found some peace over the years, knowing that the person responsible is off the streets. His story is a reminder of how much we need to support and appreciate those who serve and protect us.
