I've been thinking a lot about Pfc. Francheska Velez's story lately. It's such a devastating reminder of how life can change in an instant. She had just returned from serving overseas, looking forward to starting a new chapter of her life with her baby, and then to have everything taken away so cruelly is just incredibly sad. Reading about how she cried out for her baby during the attack is haunting. My heart truly goes out to her family—especially her father, who has shown so much strength in the wake of this tragedy. It's comforting, at least, to know that her family has been surrounded by love and support from their community and that people remember her as the joyful and vibrant person she was. Stories like Francheska's are why I believe it's crucial to focus on making military bases safer for everyone. We owe it to our service members to ensure what happened to her and the other victims never happens again.

I recently came across the story of Pfc. Francheska Velez, and it's been on my mind ever since. Something that's really struck me is thinking about how much hope and excitement she must have felt about returning home to start her maternity leave. She served her country bravely in Iraq, and after all that time in a war zone, she was finally back on U.S. soil, probably dreaming about her future with her baby. It's incredibly difficult to wrap my head around how a place that should have been safe ended up stealing that future away from her and her family. Francheska was so young and had so much life ahead of her. As someone who’s followed military life stories, her passing hits really hard for me. Her courage and dedication to her duty are immensely admirable, and the thought of her last moments breaks my heart. I truly hope her family feels surrounded by love and support, and I hope they find some comfort in knowing that people far and wide remember Francheska and honor her memory. Sending thoughts to everyone affected by this senseless tragedy.
