I was recently reading about the disappearance of Shantina Smiley and her son Azriel, and something struck me about the location where their van was found. It was stuck in a muddy embankment on a secluded beach, which immediately made me think about how disorienting some of those backroads can be, especially at night. I've driven through that area a few times myself, and the roads can get tricky if you’re not familiar with them or if visibility is poor. Throw in the possibility that Shantina might have been intoxicated or under some kind of stress, and it's not impossible to imagine how she could have ended up in such an isolated spot.
What I can’t wrap my head around is the decision to leave the van. Why did they abandon it with the doors open and belongings left behind? It's like they were trying to escape something, but what? Theories range from trying to seek help to running away from an immediate threat, yet none of these provide a solid answer. Anyone have any insights or thoughts on why someone might leave a vehicle in those circumstances? Could they have felt safer outside the van, or is there another side to this we're not considering?
Has anyone else wondered about the spot where Shantina's van was found? I’ve been trying to figure out why it ended up in such a remote area. It seems so away from any logical path they might have taken from Olympia to Camano Island. Was there anything significant about that beach? Maybe it was a shortcut she thought she knew? And what about the timing - why at night? The whole situation is puzzling and deeply concerning. If anyone’s from the area or knows it well, could that location have been appealing at that time of day for any reason? Just trying to make sense of it all.
I’ve been following Shantina and Azriel’s case for a while now, and I can’t shake this feeling about the van’s location. Steamboat Island seems like such an odd place to end up if she was truly just lost. It's clear she veered miles off her intended route down Interstate 5, but what led her to that particular beach? Has anyone looked into any possible connections she might have had in that area? It might be a long shot, but a local connection could explain why she ended up there or why she seemed so disoriented that night. Also, concerning the open van doors, I wonder if they felt they had to hurry away from something – perhaps they were startled by someone or something on that beach? Such a chilling thought, but given the reach of this community, maybe someone can shed more light on whether a specific detail about that location might offer more clues.
