I was reading about the tragic case of Thomas Alvarado and Jeremiah Ponce, and my heart goes out to their families and friends. One aspect that really stands out is the claim by Kurt Whitten's defense team that the shooting was an act of self-defense. I have to wonder how anyone can feasibly make that argument given the available evidence. The surveillance footage reportedly shows such a different story, with the truck clearly trailing Thomas and Jeremiah's car and then opening fire. It makes me think about how strong a grasp on reality you need when building a defense, especially when dealing with such serious allegations where the evidence seems so heavily weighted against you. It must be incredibly difficult for the families to sit through trials and hearings, listening to arguments that seem to defy what they've seen on tape. My thoughts are with them as they navigate this long and painful process in court.

I lived in a house very near the intersection, the night it happened we heard a few rounds from a small gun and then several rounds from the AK soon after. I can only assume they tried self defense was because the friends, rest their souls, may have started shooting at trailing truck first.
