I’ve been thinking a lot about the safety protocols at the Anchor Glass Container Corporation and how the tragic events of March 16, 1985, might have unfolded differently. It’s so sad to imagine what Paul Gabelt and the other foremen went through. As they showed up for another workday, they couldn't have guessed anything like this would happen. Workplaces surely need strong safety measures, and I wonder why more wasn’t done to prevent such a horrible tragedy. It’s crucial that places of work recognize signs of potential threats and have measures in place to address grievances before they escalate. My heart goes out to Paul’s wife, Janet, and the other families who were left to piece their lives back together. It should never come to this level of violence, and it’s a harsh reminder of the importance of mental health and proactive conflict resolution within workplaces.
