Curious if anyone else has thoughts on why Phillips would leave behind both backpacks alongside his kayak? It’s pretty unusual, right? You’d think if he was planning a hike or any extended time outdoors, he’d at least take some gear with him. Could it have been some kind of spur-of-the-moment decision to go kayaking, especially given that authorities think he was intoxicated? Maybe he was trying to lighten his load or just wasn't thinking straight. I know Moser Bay's conditions can be unpredictable, so going out there unprepared sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I’ve been following Scott Phillips' case for some time now, and something that's always puzzled me is why he would choose to go kayaking after drinking. The fact that his ATV was abandoned close to Little Narrows, and his kayaking gear was scattered, suggests he intended to be out on the water, but it’s so risky in those conditions, especially under the influence. I can’t help but wonder if he was familiar with the Moser Bay area and maybe felt confident, or if there’s something we’re missing about his motivations that day. Does anyone have more insight into his experience with kayaking, or rumors from folks in Akhiok about his usual outdoor habits?
