I’ve been thinking a lot about the environment Avondre was growing up in, especially given how active he was in trying to make something of himself. It’s really unsettling to think that someone working so hard to stay on the right path can still become a victim just because of where they live. I can’t help but wonder how many other young people are out there like Avondre, doing everything right but still facing such grave risks daily. The strength of his family in the face of all this is truly inspiring, but it also highlights how critical it is for communities to band together and demand safer streets. Does anyone know if there have been any community-led efforts or initiatives in the neighborhood since this tragedy? It feels like knowing more about what the local community is doing could be a step in helping change these grim statistics. My heart goes out to Avondre’s family and all those affected.
Hey everyone,
I'm really shaken by what happened to Avondre Donel. It hit me hard to think someone as bright and promising as Avondre could have his life cut short while simply waiting for a friend. I keep thinking about how he was planning to go play basketball before the Mother's Day dinner with his family—it's unimaginable what his family is going through right now.
What stands out to me is that he was a part of his church choir and known in his community for being so kind and driven. I can't shake the feeling that the very places meant to be safe and nurturing for kids are becoming battlegrounds. It's heartbreaking how this ongoing violence in neighborhoods is painting a frightening reality for children and their families here in Detroit.
I really hope this senseless violence comes to an end, and that Avondre’s family finds the justice they so desperately need. If anyone knows of any community initiatives or peace marches happening around Detroit that work towards ending violence, please share. We can't let Avondre's story become just another statistic.
Stay safe, everyone.
