I've been thinking about the safety concerns in the Braddock area highlighted by Leonard "Stacey" Graham's case. It's so sad that incidents like these remind us how fragile life is and how much needs to be done to ensure safer communities for everyone. There seems to be a pattern of violence that needs addressing—both by the local authorities and by us as community members. Increased patrols, community programs, whatever it takes to prevent another family from facing such a devastating loss. My heart goes out to Leonard's loved ones, especially his young daughter who will grow up without her father. We all need to ask what long-term changes could help decrease the violence in our neighborhoods. Has anyone been involved in community safety initiatives, or know of effective strategies or programs that have worked in other areas? We have to do better.
