It’s so tragic that the events from 1979 had such a lasting impact on Thomas Raymond Hayes and ultimately led to his death. I’m taken aback by the tremendous strength and resilience he must have needed to keep going after such a life-altering injury. Working as a sketch artist for the police shows how dedicated he was to serving his community, despite the immense personal challenges he faced. It’s a testament to the kind of person Hayes was at his core.
I’ve been thinking a lot about the impact this must have had on his family. Knowing that their loved one suffered for so many years with declining health conditions must have been incredibly difficult. The ruling of his death as “in the line of duty” seems like a bittersweet nod to the hardships he endured, providing some recognition and support to those he left behind.
This whole situation also makes me wonder about McClary. After serving 24 years, he’s been out for a while now, but I can't help but think about the burden of knowing that his actions led to someone’s extended suffering and death. Does anyone know if he’s said anything publicly about Hayes’ passing? My thoughts go out to all those affected by this tragedy.
