I’ve been thinking a lot about the bravery and selflessness Patrolman Stephen M. Kovach demonstrated during that awful night in 1984. From what I’ve read, it’s clear that he was a genuinely dedicated officer who put his life on the line for the safety of others. The fact that he continued to confront Charles Jackson Jr. to protect his partner, Patrolman Dave Rutt, even after being fatally wounded, really shows his courage and dedication. I can’t imagine the pain his sister, Diane Chilletz, must have felt losing him in such a tragic way. It’s heartening, though, to know that his memory is preserved on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Wall. His commitment to his duty reminds us of the many officers who risk their lives every day for their communities. If anyone is from Cleveland or knows more personal stories about Patrolman Kovach, I’d love to hear them. It’s important to keep his story alive and honor his legacy.
