Attending Fernando Lopez's memorial at Risko-Ferguson Funeral Home was deeply touching. It was evident how much he was loved by his family and friends. The stories shared painted a picture of a vibrant soul taken too soon. This senseless crime has not only devastated his loved ones but highlighted the persistent reality many in Detroit faced. Living in an area with such a high homicide rate can be incredibly unsettling. It makes me wonder about the larger systemic issues that contribute to such tragedies. While mourning Fernando, I can't help but think of the countless families who, like his, have had to deal with the sudden loss of a loved one due to violence. Detroit has come a long way since then, but Fernando’s story is a stark reminder of the struggles many communities continue to face. Sending all my love to those who knew him; hopefully, we can continue to spotlight these issues and work towards meaningful change.
