It's been gnawing at me—why was Schell out there so prepared, yet some of her choices seem puzzling? Leaving behind her wallet, money, and jewelry in the car makes sense for a tough hike, but packing lipstick? I totally get wanting to feel a bit like yourself even in rugged terrain—I mean, who wouldn’t want a little reminder of normalcy? But it does make me wonder. She was an experienced hiker, so wasn’t she concerned about signaling tools more than personal items?
This case really grips me because it illustrates how prepared Schell appeared but how things can still go wrong. She survived being lost before for two days. Could she have had a plan for the same if things went sideways again? What strikes me as odd is how the footprints and possible belongings were found, but no sign of her beyond that. Almost like she vanished suddenly. Was it really just the harsh wilderness, or is there more that nobody has pieced together?
Has anyone else noticed how unusual it is that Schell left all her valuables locked in her car before setting off on the hike? It just seems odd to me that she'd leave her wallet and jewelry behind, even if she planned to return by the end of the day. It makes me wonder if she was concerned about something happening or maybe she left them as sort of 'just in case' measure? I know people often leave unnecessary items in the car to reduce weight when hiking, but something about it just doesn't sit right with me. Thoughts? Could this point to a possible change of plan she had, or am I overthinking it? Just curious what others might think about this detail!
