I've been thinking about the difficulty of processing Caleb's tragic death and the circumstances that led to it. It's absolutely devastating to learn about the environment in which Elijah and Caleb were living. Child neglect and abuse are heavy issues in our society, and it breaks my heart to know that these tragedies often unfold silently, right under our noses. I haven't seen many discussions about how this has affected the school community at Henry Defer Intermediate. Caleb was clearly loved by his peers, and I can't imagine the impact this has had on the kids attending there, especially those who were his friends. Losing a classmate in such a violent way can be incredibly traumatic for young children. I hope the school provided counseling to help them cope. This case is a harsh reminder that we need to be vigilant. If you suspect a child is in a harmful environment, please don't hesitate to speak up. We need to protect the Calbs of this world, and it starts with caring for the most vulnerable among us.
