I just can't get my head around how quickly a situation can turn deadly. I was reading about Mahky Andrews’ case, and it hit me really hard. Two teenagers, supposed to be out making memories and thinking about their futures, ended up in a situation that could have been avoided. To think that these kids were caught up in something involving guns at such a young age... it speaks volumes about the kind of influences they might’ve been under. This raises a huge question about how we, as a community, can prevent youth from finding themselves in such life-threatening situations. Why did Mahky and Layton feel the need to meet for a gun sale? Could there have been any opportunity for guidance or intervention beforehand? It’s incredibly tragic that their families have to go through this nightmare. My thoughts are with them, and I hope they find some sort of solace in the support from those around them. How do we learn from this? How can we ensure it doesn’t happen again? This whole situation is just incredibly upsetting.
