Robert Earl Peterson, 45, of Jacksonville, North Carolina, was convicted of the August 2005 murder of his stepfather, 64-year-old retired Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office patrolman Roy Bryan Andrews. Motive reported in the case was financial: Peterson was angry after Andrews cut him off from financial support; Peterson had received about $35,000 in assistance from his mother, Andrews’ wife, in the year before the killing.
Peterson was originally sentenced to death, but a 2016 Supreme Court decision that affected non-unanimous death sentences led to the overturning of a 7-5 death verdict. On resentencing, the new jury again returned a 7-5 verdict and Peterson was resentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case drew attention because of the crime’s brutality and that the victim was a retired law enforcement officer.
Does anyone have additional information about Andrews’ life or about witnesses who were at Greenlawn Cemetery that day?
