Gary Morton, a 66-year-old resident of Jacksonville, North Carolina, was found dead on December 8, 2016, on the property behind his home on Weatherington Road. His death was ruled a homicide after he was discovered with gunshot wounds. Investigators found signs of a breaking and entering at his residence, and Morton’s SUV was located burned in a nearby wooded area.

The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office has treated the case as active. Several individuals have been identified as having a potential motive and numerous interviews have been conducted, but no arrests have been made and the case remains unsolved. Morton was known locally for his service in the National Guard and involvement in community organizations; he is remembered by family and friends as a loving father and brother.
