Has anyone been able to find any new information on this case?
it’s my understand Robert Sears died while out on bond and this case never truly made it to trial.
I looked for updates in the case. The original reporting stated that Northampton County deputies were called to the residence around 3:46 a.m. and found McJoe deceased inside the home. Sears was arrested later that day and charged with first-degree murder. At the time, investigators said the motive had not been determined, and they were unsure why McJoe was at Sears’s residence. Sheriff Jack Smith also indicated there had been a gathering of people at the home, which was located off Vaughan Creek Road in the Pendleton area.
After checking for later public updates, I was not able to find a clearly documented news report showing the final outcome of the case. I did not find a confirmed trial result, plea, conviction, dismissal, or sentencing update in publicly available news coverage. The later references I found appeared to repeat the original 2017 information rather than provide a resolution.
Because of that, the case should probably be listed as having no publicly confirmed disposition based on available online sources. The most reliable way to confirm what happened after the arrest would be to check North Carolina court records for Roberts Sears or Robert Sears in Northampton County, or to contact the Northampton County Clerk of Superior Court and ask for the final disposition of the 2017 murder charge. I also couldn't find an obituary or death certificate for Robert.
At this point, I would not want to claim that Sears was convicted, acquitted, or that the case was dismissed without a court record or official source confirming it.
