The parking lot of Petra Hookah Lounge is such a familiar spot for a lot of people in Greensboro, which makes the events of December 15 even more unsettling. It's chilling to think that a place so many have visited in the past was the scene of such a tragic loss. I've seen a couple of posts already about what a positive and cherished presence Chaunci was to those who knew him. It's comforting, at least, to hear about the loving memories people shared with him. My heart truly goes out to his family and friends. I think the spaces where incidents like this happen gain a ghostly feel; it's a reminder of how real and close the violence and loss are to everyday life here. Anyone else in the community feel the need for a dialogue about safety in these common gathering spots? I hope voices will continue to be heard as the case moves forward. Chaunci deserves that much, at least.
