Has anyone else been reflecting on the circumstances surrounding Gertie and Jerry's tragic end? It really struck me when I heard that Gertie had been enduring dementia for so many years while Jerry was suffering from an undiagnosed illness. It seems like the weight of their health battles must have been incredibly heavy on them both. I feel so deeply for their granddaughter, Morgan. It must be incredibly complex to reconcile the love she knows they shared with the heartbreaking way their lives ended. I can't imagine what the past few years have been like for the family, watching them both decline and feeling so helpless. It's a small comfort to know that they are together and no longer in pain, but it's still so incredibly sad to lose them in this way. Thinking of how Gertie brightened her community with her warmth and generosity, especially with her famous cupcakes, really emphasizes the loss. Her coaching the softball team and being so active in the church shows how deeply she cared for those around her. It's oftentimes the quiet pillars like Gertie who leave the biggest void when they're gone. I hope the family finds some peace and strength from those they loved in the community who are mourning with them.
