I recently came across Denver Smith's case again and can't stop thinking about the role of protests in shaping change, even when they end tragically. It's disheartening to know that the students' legitimate demands for better conditions at Southern University ended in such a horrific way. Denver was so young and had his whole life ahead of him, fighting for a better educational experience and for what he believed in. It's awful to think that his actions for a noble cause resulted in such a senseless loss of life.
The fact that no one faced justice for what happened is truly unsettling. The apology issued by Governor John Bel Edwards on behalf of Louisiana might bring some level of recognition to the families, but it's far from closure. Remembering Denver and Leonard "Douglas" Brown through the memorial union and their posthumous degrees is a meaningful gesture, but it makes me wonder if even more could be done to honor their legacy and fight for justice. Would love to hear your thoughts on how communities can continue to push for justice in cold cases like this one.
It's truly disheartening to think about the struggles Denver Smith and Leonard "Douglas" Brown had to endure, only to have their lives abruptly ended in such a violent way. I’ve been reflecting on the fact that despite the multiple investigations and the effort from both the state and federal levels, justice has been elusive. It’s astonishing how nine potential suspects were identified, yet there was not enough evidence to bring even one of them to trial. Can anyone imagine the frustration and helplessness the families must have felt during those years?
The sheer lack of accountability is unsettling. I wonder what kind of message that sends to the community and to other student activists. To every family member and friend of Denver and Douglas: I can't begin to understand your sorrow, but I hope you find some solace in the fact that their legacy is honored at Southern University. The fight they put up for their beliefs continues to resonate, inspiring new generations to seek justice and reform. Thoughts and prayers to all those affected by this tragedy.
