I’ve been thinking a lot about the role Deputy Bruce Vanderhoeven played in securing the convictions. Hypnosis as a tool for witness recall was pretty controversial then, and still is now. Does anyone know if there were other cases in Louisiana around the same time where hypnosis was used to refresh a witness's memory? It seems risky, but Deputy Vanderhoeven's observations must have been critical in this case. It makes me wonder how much weight was placed on his testimony and whether the defense could have had a stronger argument challenging its admissibility. This makes me feel for Harold Austin’s family, knowing every detail of the trial would have been agonizing. If anyone has insights or thoughts on hypnosis in legal settings, I’d love to hear them.
