I've been fascinated by the St. Valentine's Day Massacre for years, and each time I read about it, I'm struck by how many lives were shattered that day. While most people focus on the gang dynamics and the supposed involvement of Al Capone, I've been thinking a lot about Adam Heyer's dog, "Highball." It's heartbreaking to imagine that poor dog tied up in the garage, witnessing such a terrifying event. Animals seem to have an intuition that can sense when something terrible is happening, and Highball's frantic barking was a desperate cry for help.
In reading about these old crime stories, it's easy to get swept up in the drama and headlines, but I often find myself wondering about the human side of things. Heyer was an accountant, likely someone who was drawn into a world far more dangerous than he might have anticipated. He and the others didn't deserve to meet such a violent end — a reminder of the dark side of those Prohibition-era days. I'm left thinking about what happened to Highball afterward and who took care of him. If anyone knows more about that or Heyer's life outside his gang involvement, I'd love to hear it. It’d be interesting to add a personal layer to the historical narrative we know.
Does anyone else feel for Highball, Heyer’s dog, who was tied up during the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre? It’s heartbreaking to think that this loyal pup had to witness such unimaginable violence. I've always felt that animals sense things we don't, and I can't help but wonder how Highball reacted to the chaos that unfolded. It's a tragic reminder that even innocent pets are affected by human acts of violence.
While we often focus on the victims and the gangland drama, it's easy to forget those small details that paint a fuller picture of the day. Imagining Highball’s frantic barking is haunting, but it’s equally significant because it helped draw attention to the crime scene. This little piece of the story has always stuck with me.
Does anyone know what became of Highball after that day? It would be a small comfort to hear that, at least, this innocent creature found some peace after such an ordeal.
