Hey everyone,
I came across Telkia Burns' case and couldn't stop thinking about how much this guy accomplished in his short life. It's deeply saddening to read about someone who served our country and was on the path to making a difference in his community, only to have his life shattered in such a violent way. I was particularly struck by his love for cooking. It's such a personal passion that tells you a lot about a person—I wonder if anyone in the neighborhood ever got a chance to share a meal with him? I bet he had this way of bringing people together over food.
It's so frustrating that communities that could benefit the most from people like Telkia are the ones that face these kinds of tragic losses. How do we even begin to address that? My heart is with his family and friends who lost not just a loved one, but a beacon of hope.
If anyone knows more about his work in community health or his time in the Navy, I'd love to hear about it and learn more about who Telkia was.

The way his Navy buddies and classmates speak about him, it’s clear he left a lasting legacy. My heart goes out to Katherine, Telkia’s children, and everyone who was touched by his life. No one should have to endure such loss, and it’s important for us to support efforts that might prevent future tragedies in South Chicago.
