I’ve been thinking a lot about the role of body and dash cam footage in cases like Paul O’Neal’s. The release of those videos was pivotal in raising awareness and sparking a conversation around police conduct, but I can only imagine how devastating it must have been for Paul’s family to see the last moments of his life play out in such a public way. It seems like there’s always a fine line between the need for transparency and the retraumatization of victims' families. While the footage was crucial in highlighting the policy violations, it pains me that justice still wasn’t served in terms of accountability for every officer involved. Sending thoughts to everyone still fighting for change and reform—it’s clear we have a long way to go.
