I recently became aware of the tragic story of Millizza "Liza" Steen, and I can't help but feel a deep sense of empathy for her friends and family. Knowing she had filed multiple orders of protection against Aswad Ahmeer "Shorty" Bryant makes her story even more devastating. Orders of protection are supposed to offer some degree of safety, and it's painful to see that they weren’t enough in Liza's case. What really struck me was how the warning signs were so clearly documented. Despite Liza's efforts to legally shield herself from Bryant, it seems the system failed her. I wonder if there are ways the legal processes around protective orders can be improved to ensure they offer more real-world protection and enforcement. For anyone else familiar with similar cases, have you seen any changes in how these situations are handled since Liza's case? My heart goes out to everyone affected, and I sincerely hope that we can learn and bring about changes so similar tragedies are less likely to occur.
