Has anyone looked into the background check system that failed to stop Gary Martin from getting a gun? It’s such a crucial piece of this tragedy that seems to get lost in the larger conversation. From my understanding, Martin had a felony conviction and should never have been able to possess a firearm. I’m deeply saddened thinking about how this oversight allowed him to carry out such a devastating act, taking away Clay and the others from their loved ones. It’s frustrating to see these systems in place that don’t work as they should, and it’s clear something needs to change to ensure better enforcement and prevent future tragedies. My heart goes out to Clay's family; losing someone so cherished because of a preventable flaw in our systems is unthinkable. Does anyone know if there have been movements or legislative pushes in Illinois following this event to address these kinds of failures?
