I'm still trying to wrap my head around how such a young life could be taken in such a senseless manner. I was reading about Zarious and it just breaks my spirit to know someone so full of life and promise is no longer with us. What really strikes me is how many lives have been impacted by this tragedy. The choice of someone like Zavion Marks, who's only 14, to carry out such an act underlines how grave the influences around us can be, especially on our youth. And that "felony murder" law that caught up with Doyle Nelson is something I had never really thought about until this case. It makes me realize the immense responsibility young adults carry without often knowing it. Even if Nelson didn't pull the trigger, the intent of being part of the robbery sealed his fate in a way that impacts not only him but Zarious's family further with the legal ordeal. We're dealing with a community issue, not just individual punishment. I sincerely hope Zarious's family finds some semblance of peace and that his story encourages positive changes around mentorship and youth support in Peoria. It's gut-wrenching to think of the void left in his loved ones' lives. This all just calls for a need to come together to prevent future tragedies like this from happening.
