I’ve been thinking a lot about the impact of fear in communities like Humboldt Park, where Keith Griggs was tragically killed. It’s such a complex issue that doesn’t get talked about enough. Fear doesn't just affect individuals—it really has a way of stifling the whole community. People are scared to speak up, even when they hold crucial pieces of the puzzle. I can’t blame them, to be honest. The fear of retaliation is a harsh reality, and when the stakes are life or death, it’s understandable why some might decide to stay silent, even when justice is on the line. It’s sad because so many crimes might remain unsolved just because potential witnesses are caught in this struggle between doing what’s right and protecting themselves or their families. Keith didn’t deserve what happened to him. No one does. I just hope that as a society, we can find better ways to protect those who come forward, to create an environment where people feel safer cooperating with investigations. If we can do that, maybe we’ll see fewer cases like Keith’s where fear impedes justice. My heart goes out to his family and friends as they continue to cope with his loss.
