I’ve been following Michael Montgomery’s case closely, and something that keeps bothering me is the impact on his neighborhood. I grew up near Ashburn and, while I moved away years ago, it’s still shocking to see such violence tearing the community apart. I’ve read some posts from his neighborhood on community forums, and you can really sense the fear and sadness there. It’s like the whole block is holding its breath, waiting for what might come next. Michael was so young, just starting out in life, and the community feels that loss deeply. The discussions people have had about the lack of resources and support for young people are eye-opening. It seems many feel there’s a huge need for more community centers or after-school programs to give kids and teens a safe place to go and something to focus their energy on. I hope out of this tragedy, there can be conversations and actions to better support neighborhoods like Ashburn and others across Chicago. Has there been any talk about community-led initiatives since all of this happened? What about resources for families dealing with the aftermath of such a loss? It’s hard to make sense of such a devastating event, and my thoughts are with Michael’s community and family as they navigate this difficult time.
