Does anyone else here have family or friends who worked in the oil and gas sector during the 70s or 80s? I’ve always been struck by stories like that of James Hugghins aboard the SS V.A. Fogg. The risks these guys faced were just immense, and I wonder if their safety training was up to snuff by today’s standards. My uncle worked on tankers in the late 70s, and I've heard some frightening tales of what went down on those ships. Sometimes I think about how much has changed, but stories like Hugghins’ remind me not to take advancements in safety for granted. It's sobering to think about all the families that never got closure. Anyone have more insights into what safety measures were like back then, or does anyone have personal experiences to share about that era of maritime work?
