I’ve been thinking a lot about Stephen Straus and what his loss means, not just to his family but to the broader Highland Park community. I didn’t know Stephen personally, but from everything I’ve read, he embodied the kind of warmth and humor that are rare qualities these days. It’s just so unfair for someone who brought so much joy to others to have their life cut short in such a cruel way.
One thing that really stands out to me is how every year he attended the Fourth of July parade without fail, a tradition that he cherished. It’s a vivid reminder of how deeply these events of senseless violence affect our community rituals, the traditions we pass down through generations. What was once a day of celebration now carries the weight of overwhelming grief and fear.
I can only hope that moving forward, we do more than just remember Stephen and the others lost. We have to channel our collective sorrow into real change, both for stricter gun laws and better mental health resources, to honor them in the way they deserve. My thoughts are with his family and all those affected, as they navigate this unimaginable loss. Let’s not forget to support each other and push for the changes needed to prevent another tragedy like this.
